Uplistsikhe, an ancient cave city carved into the rocky hills of Georgia’s eastern region, is one of the country’s most captivating historical sites. Dating back to at least the 6th century BCE, this UNESCO World Heritage site offers a fascinating glimpse into a once-thriving urban center that blends human ingenuity with the natural landscape.
‘Uplistsikhe’ translates to ‘Lord’s Fortress’. The site consists of a network of caves, tunnels, and rooms, all hewn from the soft sandstone cliffs. The caves are interconnected by narrow passageways, and many of them still retain the outlines of their original structures and are testament to the people who lived here thousands of years ago
