Midnight in the Sahara: Music, Myth, and Motion
In the spring of 2025, we ventured deep into the heart of Morocco, a country where the colors are richer, the air more fragrant, and every horizon tells a tale. This was a recce trip. The journey began in Marrakesh. Under the shadow of the Koutoubia Mosque and the spell of the Djemaa el-Fna’s storytellers and spice merchants, Morocco’s magic began to unfold.
From Marrakesh, the road twisted through the majestic Tizi n’Tichka Pass, a serpentine route through the High Atlas Mountains. Huge peaks gave way to desert plains, leading to Aït Ben Haddou, an ancient ksar of ochre-red clay that rises from the earth like a mirage. This UNESCO World Heritage Site has long captivated filmmakers; its striking silhouette appears in Game of Thrones, Gladiator, and The Mummy, offering a backdrop as timeless as the stories it tells.
Nearby, Ouarzazate—often dubbed the “Hollywood of Africa”—stood as a gateway to the desert and Morocco’s cinematic soul. Home to Atlas Studios, it has hosted productions from Lawrence of Arabia to Kingdom of Heaven. But beyond the film sets lies an authentic beauty: quiet kasbahs, date palms swaying in the breeze, and endless skies.
The journey continued westward to Essaouira, a breezy coastal citadel where whitewashed walls meet the sea. Here, the rhythm of Gnawa music—a spiritual tradition born from West African roots—echoed through the alleyways, offering an auditory tapestry of trance-like chants and metallic krakebs. It was in Essaouira that the traveler first felt the pull of Gnawa’s ancient heartbeat.
But it was in the vast, golden emptiness of the Sahara where Morocco revealed its deepest poetry. In Merzouga, the edge of the world seemed to begin. The traveler mounted a camel and crossed into the dreamscape of the Erg Chebbi dunes, their curves sculpted by wind and time. Under a sky ablaze with stars, we hiked at midnight in search of a firelit gathering where Gnawa musicians played into the night—an experience beyond words, as much ritual as performance.
In this place where silence hums and rhythm echoes across the sand, the traveler found something ancient and stirring. Morocco, with its palette of terracotta and cobalt, its music, its myths, and its cinematic landscapes, offered not just a journey through space—but through memory, sound, and spirit.
